We’re big fans of Dr. Kristen Neff’s work on self-compassion. While good self-esteem is vital to a happy life and healthy society, it’s a slippery concept and often problematic to teach.  When misapplied healthy self-esteem can turn into narcissism, entitlement or an inaccurate sense of self.  “Good” self-esteem also necessitates the existence of “bad” self-esteem and therefore a separation and judgment among fellows.

Self-compassion “has all the benefits” of self-esteem, yet removes comparisons and a requirement that everyone be above average (a statistical impossibility) to have a healthy, high sense of self.
